Portraits in family tree are contained in invisible frames of 200x200 pixels. If you upload photos that bigger than 200x200, they are resized to fit 200x200 pixels frames.

Although invisible frame is a square, you can upload picture of any shape into this frame. Circle and ellipse are popular symmetrical shapes. This article presents how to crop photo in circle and ellipse using photoshop.

Steps to crop photo in circle and ellipse

Step 1 : Select a picture to crop

Start Photoshop.
Click File and Open. Follow step no 1 and 2.

Choose a picture to crop.

The photo you choose should be high resolution. If it is medium resolution or less, the cropped picture will not be good because there are not enough pixels.



Step 2 : Choose Background Color

The part of photo that is out of circle or ellipse will be clipped. That part is replaced with background color. So background color of photo should be chosen as the same color as background of family tree. Background color of family tree is white so chose white for background color of photo. However, you may choose different color as you wish.

Look for in tools menu.

Click the lower square (step no 3)
to choose background color.

Click on white area to choose white (step no 4)
or enter color code ffffff in # (step no 5).

The chosen color appears in square of step no 6.

Click OK to confirm selection.

Step 3 : Draw a Circle or an Ellipse



Tools for drawing a circle or a rectangle are in the same menu (Marquee Tool). Icon of menu may be a rectangle or a circle. It depends on the last shape that is chosen.

Click Marquee Tool (step no 7)

Click Elliptical Marquee Tool
(step no 8)

Click mouse at step no 9.
Press Shift of keyboard to control a circle and hold it while dragging mouse to step no 10.



If you want to draw an ellipse, do not press Shift of keyboard.
Click mouse at step no 11 and drag to step no 12.



An ellipse or a circle can be moved to left, right, up and down using
arrow keys of keyboard.


Step 4 : Clip the part out of circle or ellipse

The part of photo in a circle or an ellipse is the part that is chosen.
Delete the part of photo that is out of circle or ellipse in order to get that part in circle or ellipse.

Click Select (step no 13)
and Inverse (step no 14)
in order to get the part that is out of circle or ellipse.
Inverse = opposite

If you draw an ellipse
and click Inverse
you get the part that is out of ellipse.

Press Delete of keyboard
to delete the part of photo that is out of ellipse.

The part of photo out of ellipse is deleted. It becomes background color.

Clip the white area.

Click and drag a rectangle surround ellipse.

Click Image and Crop to clip the white area that is out of rectangle.

Step 5 : Save cropped photo

Click File and Save as.
Enter file name and select file type.
File type is JPEG in general.

File name of cropped photo should be different from the original name to make sure that original file is not over written.

Select Quality of High.
